There are 6 pillars of Islam, the third of which is to believe in the Books of Allah (swt).
“The Messenger believed in what was revealed unto him by his Lord and so did the faithful. All of them believed in Allah, His angels, His Books and His Messengers.” (Al-Baqarah, 285)
“Righteousness is not (merely) in that you turn your faces towards the East or the West. Rather, righteousness is to believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book and the Messengers”. (Al-Baqarah, 177)
Similarly, “Whoever disbelieved in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers and the Last Day, surely fell into an utmost error.” (Al-Nisa, 136)
Allah guided and helped different nations by sending a revelation that contained the laws that were to be observed by a particular nation. He sent revelations through a Prophet and also blessed him with the knowledge and wisdom to teach the revelations to his people. These Books helped the people understand that Allah was the only One worthy of worship, and that true success in this life and the Hereafter could only be achieved by worshipping Him alone, without any partner(s).
In regards to the belief in the revealed Books, we as Muslims believe in what Allah (swt) named of them in the Qurán, namely:
- The Suhuf (Scrolls) sent to the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham)[i]
- The Tawrah (Torah) sent to the Prophet Musa (Moses)[ii]
- The Zabur (Psalms) sent to the Prophet Dawood (David) [iii]
- The Injeel (Bible) sent to the Prophet Isa (Jesus)[iv]
- The Qurán as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (saw) – the final revelation[v].
Our faith has to be that the Books revealed to the Messengers came to them from Allah, and that they are the truth, the guidance, the light, the explanation and the healing. Allah (saw) said: “Say, ‘We believe in Allah, in what has been sent down unto us, in what was sent unto Ibrahim, Ismaíl, Is-haq, Ya’qub, and the tribes, and what was given to Musa, Isa, and what other prophets were given by their Lord. We do not distinguish between them and we have surrendered ourselves unto Him” (Al-Baqarah, 136)
It is confirmed that “To thee We sent the Scripture in truth [Qurán], confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety…”” (Quran 5:48)
However, although Muslims believe in all of the Divine Revelations revealed by Allah (swt), we follow the Qur’an only as it is the Final Revelation of Allah (swt).
